Report into Warrnambool Exchange fire released

Telstra has released its report into the November 22 Warrnambool Exchange fire, with recommendations published on how a similar incident can be avoided into the future.

The fire saw 65,000 landlines go out, 15,000 broadband connections fail and 80 mobile phone towers knocked out when flames took hold of the exchange centre in the regional Victorian town.

A non-suspicious electrical fault was to blame, the report concluded, with the huge extent of the fire causing an inability to locate a single ignition source.

Chief operations officer with Telstra Brendon Riley explained that the company had learnt a number of lessons, with every recommendation to be implemented including physical, process and disaster recovery improvements.

"We can never completely protect against this type of incident but we can learn from it to improve the resilience and robustness of our network across Australia for our customers," he said.

"We are making the key findings of the report public so the people of south-west Victoria can see what we've learnt and the improvements we are planning to make."

The compensation process has been up and running for three months and will continue for the next three years.
