QLD energy minister chairs consumer group
Queensland energy minister Mark McArdle today (February 19) chaired a forum for consumer groups to have their say on aspects of government policy related to electricity prices, electricity suppliers and other issues.
The Queensland Consumer and Energy Reference Group heard from Dr John Tamblyn and John Ryan, both industry experts who are looking to create a national consumer advocates group.
"The new body will be established through the Standing Committee on Energy and Resources, to give consumers a greater voice," he explained.
"Today's meeting will seek input from our consumer groups about Queensland's representation on the new National Consumer Advocacy Body, and how to ensure it is accountable back to Queensland consumers."
Mr McArdle added that this forum is part of the Newman government's desire to engage with the general public and see them participate in the discussion.
The minister said that reforms in the electricity sector often occur as the direct result of bill payers engaging with the issues.
Representatives of these consumer groups have dedicated a great amount of time to this forum, the minister concluded, adding that he was thankful for that and the productive discussion that resulted.
