Optus axing 290 jobs
Optus has announced that it will axe 290 jobs across a variety of departments in a bid to subsidise its losses from its ailing fixed-line broadband business.
Jobs from the marketing, IT, networks and sales departments will suffer losses, with Optus looking to prepare itself for an anticipated pick up in fixed-line business through the National Broadband Network (NBN).
Martin Mercer has been appointed as the telco's managing director of its strategy and fixed team to ensure that the company is well prepared for the challenges of the future, with Mr Mercer explaining that the NBN offers Optus the chance to experience growth.
He explained: "Fixed is at the heart of our business. Optus was established on the back of providing choice in fixed line telephony.
"We've been advocates for structural change in telecommunications for over a decade, and now it’s happening we want to show Australians that we are committed to helping take advantage of the opportunities becoming available to them."
In addition to the preparation for the NBN, the company is also looking to improve its current operations, including improving customer communication, ending door-to-door sales by third parties and improving its IT systems.
