Choosing an energy efficient appliance
If you are in the market for a new appliance like a dishwasher or washing machine and your main focus is on a unit that saves energy and water, then there a few things to look at.
First of all, to easily compare electricity usage, look at the star ratings which indicate energy and water usage. For example, some dishwashers retain the water from the final cycle of the previous wash, and use it as a pre wash in the following cycle. Opting for an appliance with eco-friendly features can help you do your part for the environment and save on electricity costs at the same time.
Apart from the star rating, washing machines that are front loaders typically are more efficient than the top loader variety. Opt for the cold cycles, which use far less energy - many brands now have eco washes, which try to limit the water used.
You may find that it's also more efficient to find a machine that offers a load-dependent cycle option, which allows you to choose the level of water you need. This comes in handy where you desperately need to wash that pair of pants for a special occasion but don't want to waste a load of water if you haven't got enough to go into the machine.
