Auditing your energy use for 2013

Given that it is the new year, it's important to think about how you will approach the coming 12 months when it comes to energy consumption.

Electricity prices have increased by a large amount in the last few years and if you own a small business then it might be a good idea to conduct an energy audit.

You can do this even in your own home as a way of finding out what parts of your house or business unnecessarily suck up power.

Look at your appliances to see if they are inefficiently using electricity - it may be time to think about investing in new more environmentally friendly replacements.

If much of your bill is taken up by lighting costs, then open up blinds and curtains as an alternative because the sun really is a free source of light.

Outdoor lights can take up power, especially if they are left on for a long period of time. Motion sensors can ensure that they are only turned on when they are needed.

If after your audit you still feel your bills should be lower, talk to a comparison and switching service to see if there is a better deal out there for you with a different provider.
